History
ShotgunThe duck gun in the United States and Canada is usually a pump action or semi-automatic shotgun, however a number of hunters choose to hunt with break action guns including side-by-side and over-under guns. In the United States, UK, Canada, and many western European countries (France in 2006) all shot used for waterfowl must be non-toxic, and therefore may not contain any lead. Steel is the cheapest alternative to lead but steel has a much less effective range than lead. 30 to 40 yards is considered the maximum effective range for duck hunting. In order to kill a duck or goose with a shotgun the bird must be close. Break action guns are not very useful for duck hunting. The hunter will only get two shots. With a pump action you have to waste time pumping the gun after each shot. The way to go is with a Semi-Automatic shotgun. The faster you pull the trigger the faster you shoot. Remember in some states you need a plug in your gun. Steel shot is needed for ducks and it is worthless. The way around that is spend a little extra money on tungsten birdshot. It is heavier and does the job. If you use steel shot, shoot a 3" round instead of a 2 3/4" round. This will give you more shot when you shoot. Also use a modifide our a improved cylinder choke on your barrel because they will leave you room for error. If you want to use a full choke to get out farther thats fine, but it wont leave you as much room for error.
DecoysDuck decoys are used to attract birds to a hunting spot or blind. The three most common materials used in decoys are wood, cork and plastic. Cork is almost the same density as a duck and therefore is considered to be the most realistic in the way that it floats and moves on the water. Wood is a cheap alternative to cork. Most hunters no longer use wood or cork decoys because they are heavy and maintenance intensive. Plastic decoys are much more common due to their commercial availability and cost. Decoys come in almost all species of duck and goose that are hunted. Most hunting experts agree that mallard decoys work best for general hunting situations because mallards are the most common species in North America and most other species are willing to land in their flock.Also the scaup or bluebills and black duck decoys are good because they are a dark color and the ducks tend to land because they can see it from a far distance.
CallsIn old times, a duck call was a very simple woodwind instrument. It had a barrel, a sounding board and a reed. Hunters would grunt into the call while saying “hut”, "quit" or "ut". With the improvement of calls and calling techniques the best callers are able to use no voice. This produces a call that sounds like a mallard hen quacking.
